Each year the largest car happening here in Phoenix is the annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Auction in Scottsdale. The auction takes place next week from January 15-20 at the West World Complex, and to be televised on SpeedTV.
One of the hallmarks of Barrett-Jackson is their affinity for the Muscle Car, and the gravity that Fords, Shelbys and Mustangs bring to the auction block. This year is special as Carroll Shelby himself past away just last spring. This development has brought a number of interesting cars out of the woodwork that have unique Shelby history.

Additionally, as the economy is slowly getting better a number of cars are starting to surface at this year's event that make for interesting indicators as to where the Mustang and Ford collector market is headed. We are talking about recent-day collectibles like some 1980's, 1990's and even current model cars.
One of the late-model Mustangs rolling across the block at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Collector Auction is a 2013 Shelby GT-500 Cobra Tribute car (Lot 3013) built by friends of Carroll Shelby shortly after his passing. The Guardsman Blue wide-body GT-500 has over 800 horsepower and is themed in traditional 1960's color and dress. It will be sold for charity to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Also from Shelby American is a 2012 Shelby GT-500 Super Snake 50th Anniversary Edition (Lot 1321). This car is one of only two that were used as press cars and shown around the country including the Detroit Auto Show last year. The black and gold Super Snake has all options and currently belongs to Shelby American.
Among the classics coming to the block is the very rare 1968 Shelby GT-500 EXP (Lot 5022). Known as the Green Hornet, this was an experimental prototype notch-back coupe which was used by Shelby in the 1960's to test a variety of concepts. It features a Conelec fuel-injected 428 Police Interceptor V8 and an independent rear-suspension. There is only one of these cars in the world, and this one is restored to pristine condition, expected to fetch well into the six-figure price range.
Some custom cars by famed custom rod creators Ringbrothers are crossing the block as well. The first is a 1970 Mach 1 known as Dragon (Lot 5012). The highly custom built retro-mod is a show winning car with burgundy paint, Forgeline wheels and a fire breathing 427 Roush crate motor. Inside is a truly one-of-a-kind bespoke leather interior.
Also from the Ring brothers is a matched pair of cars known as the Producer and its Big Sister. The 1965 Mustang fastback (Lot 5051) has a striking black and orange paint-job. The car is widened some 4” and has a complete custom fabricated suspension and drive-train. The interior is a custom clean-sheet leather design with racing seats and high-end trims. It's Big Sister (Lot 5052) is a customized 2007 Shelby GT-500 in matching paint with a number of carbon fiber touches.
One of the interesting cars to see this year is not so old, a 1984 Mustang GT Convertible 5.0 (Lot 328). The car has been in a collection most of its life and is said to be a time capsule, still having the new car smell. Nearly 30 years old, this 1984 Mustang is a true survivor with original interior, paint and all hardware including a spare tire that has never touched the ground.
