The Mazda BT 50

While Mazda may have been confirmed as the most popular manufacturer for the SUV, small car and mid range saloon in Australia, the company are not satisfied yet. The car giant have set their sights on hitting even higher sales figures and are looking to expand the growth of the Mazda BT 50 sales to accomplish this.

The Mazda BT 50 utility vehicle is planned as a method of obtaining an even greater market share of fleet and light commercial sales globally as well as domestically. Managing director of Mazda Australia, Martin Benders, has recently confirmed his belief that the sales of the CX 5 could increase higher than their record breaking levels and the only restriction to this is global supply. Benders insists that demand is not a problem and Mazda global is continually addressing production development strategies to increase production at their Japanese facility. While the Japanese production has increased by thirty percent to 200,000 vehicles, the cars are barely staying in the showroom as they are sold straight away.
However, the SUV market is not the only potential area for growth. The light commercial market is only area where the Japanese car giant could capitalise and the Mazda BT 50 could provide the perfect vehicle for the task. The sales of the BT 50 currently rank Mazda as the fifth best selling brand in the 4×4 segment of this category, while in the 4×2 segment, they are ranked forth. This has the company in direct competition with the Toyota HiLux, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and the Ford Ranger.

The reason attributed for this lower sales figure is the constraints on supply of the Mazda BT 50. This has created waiting lists of weeks for some models particularly the automatic versions. However, the company are confident that they have a product which is more than a rival for their competitors. This has highlighted a great opportunity for the company to meet the natural level of demand. This will allow the company to not need to chase sales but concentrate on improving supply. This will involve hard negotiations with Mazda Japan to increase imports of the vehicles to Australia.
Mazda can also see a potential boost in sales by taking a more sales driven approach to the fleet segment of the market. While Mazda has very few fleet sales in the passenger vehicle market, with light commercial vehicles, it is a very lucrative part of the market. This showcases the great potential of the Mazda BT 50 as there will be a great demand for people buying single vehicles. However, there is also a great opportunity for small fleet supply. This will of course mean that Mazda Australia will need a steady supply of the BT 50 along with other Mazda models, but with Mazda global, looking at the sales potential offered from the Australian market, it certainly warrants serious consideration.
